Enjoying good health is one of the primary concerns of any human being. This is reason enough to validate the continuously evolving and growing multi-billion dollarmedical industry. Health care is ranked among the largest industries in the U.S today, and it offers a wide array of paths for anyone who wishes to be a part of it. Studies have shown that the job opportunities in this industry are projected to grow an impressive 27 per cent between 2004 and 2014.

Medical careersoffer a wide variety of roles and you can choose thecareer pathaccording to your aptitude, qualifications and requirements. Generally, while choosing a career, a number of things crop up on our “wish-list”. These include serving others, job satisfaction, job security, and a good pay packet among other things. Very few occupations can meet the criteria that we look for in a career, however, medical careers is one such field that meets all these requirements and more.

One of the important qualities you must have, if you want acareer in medicineis the desire to serve people. Medical careers can be very fulfilling for the simple reason, that irrespective of the field you opt for here, you can make a difference to people’s lives. These jobs command respect and can be very satisfying at the end of the day.

There are manytypes of medical careers: the most obvious being doctors, physicians and surgeons. These professions probably require some of the most demanding training and qualifications, but on the bright side, they are among the highest paid. You can also choose to be a therapist, nurse, medical assistant or move towards being on the dental side or working in the lab. You also have the option of being a medical technician, or choose to work on the administrative side, like medical billing or medical transcription.

Since there are so many different jobs that one can pursue in the medical field, it is not possible to generalize and give onejob description. However, having a scientific outlook, dedication to duty, and willingness to work hard, would be some of the mandatory qualities for whatever field you choose in healthcare.

If you choose to be a General Physician, or a pediatrician, or an OB/GYN, or a surgeon, to name a few jobs, then you may have to put in long and irregular hours. Sometimes, you may be putting in about 60 hours per week. In such professions, there would also be a requirement to attend to emergencies at odd times. However, other branches like technicians, medical transcriptionists etc. may be putting in more regular working hours. Some other jobs in the medical field may require working in shifts.
