Career Description:

The career of an accounts payable supervisor revolves around payment approval and release of the organization’s expenditures or investments.  This excludes the employees’ payroll of the organization.  This is handled by a different group of people known as the payroll accountants or professionals.  Payments to be made outside of the organization, such as vendors, distributors or contractors, are handled by the accounts payable professionals.  It is the duty and responsibility of an accounts payable supervisor to oversee the operations of the accounts payable team.  He is to handle and manage payments, invoices, budget, financial reports and other financial transactions outside the organization.  He is also tasked in the selection, hiring, training and evaluation of staff.

How to become an Accounts Payable Supervisor

To move up to the position of an accounts payable supervisor, one must begin by earning a degree in finance, accounting or other related field. While taking the degree, seek employment and start in an entry-level position such as data-entry.  Become a data entry supervisor and gain the necessary experience in accounting.  Seek for a specialization. Since one may be hired in various industries, one must gain training and education in a specific field.  It is a must that an accounts payable supervisor has good computer skills.  It is best to be familiar with specific applications and software needed to do this type of career.  One may also pursue further studies and earn a master’s degree.  Having a higher level of education and being an experienced Certified Public Accountant makes more qualified for an accounts payable supervisor career.
