ALRE Teacher Career


The adult literacy and remedial education (ALRE) teacher takes on three roles.  One may be classified as an adult basic education teacher (ABE), adult secondary education teacher (ASE) or English for speakers of other languages teacher (ESOL).  The responsibilities and duties include planning lessons, implementing various teaching methods, and evaluating students’ progress.  The ALRE specializes in teaching adults in various subject areas and providing individualized lesson or education plan for specific students. He is tasked to help adults in improving communication, comprehension, problem solving and critical thinking.

How to become an Adult Literacy and Remedial Education Teacher

To become an adult literacy and remedial education teacher, one must earn a bachelor’s degree.  Pursue a degree specific to the field that one wants to teach.  One may pursue further studies and earn a master’s degree in adult education.  Complete a teacher training program as well.  Both a degree and training program are required to obtain a license to teach.  Specific licenses are required in a specific location or state.

A master’s degree in adult education provides a specialized background in education.  The degree program covers various courses such as history and philosophy of adult education, adult development and learning, learning principles, research and evaluation in adult education, and distance education.  Elective courses are also provided through the program.  Electives include areas such as advising adult learners, policy studies in adult and continuing education, management and administration, language and literacy, course design and development, and research and evaluation.
