Career Description:

The CAD or computer-aided design technician plays an important role in the engineering, manufacturing and construction industry.  The CAD software is used by a CAD technician to come up with building design plans and industrial machines or machinery.  These designs will help in various areas such as of construction, building and testing prototypes, cost projection, and production of instruction or installation manuals. To successfully fulfill one’s responsibilities, a CAD technician works with a team under the supervision of a design engineer.  One must have the skills in communication, computer use, and problem solving.  The CAD technician must be able to work well with a team and contribute his knowledge of manufacturing processes, construction methods, design principles, and material properties.

How to become a CAD Technician

An aspiring CAD technician must have completed high school or GED. One must have gained a good background in math, physics, computer science and drawing. One may then pursue an associate or bachelor’s degree in engineering technology, computer science or other degree programs that includes CAD.  Gain relevant experience as an apprentice or assistant in an engineering or construction firm.  One may complete his apprenticeship program while taking up his degree program.  Obtain a certification.  A certification will help one gain employment as a CAD technician in various firms.
