If you want to pursue a career guidance teacher career, you should first of all become a qualified teacher. Then you should take more qualifications in guidance and counseling.

If you want to teach at the high school level, you should at least have a higher diploma. However, even if you are not a teacher but you are qualified to be a counselor, you can still apply for the job. But keep in mind that those candidates who already have teaching qualifications will be considered first.

Then you need to get license as a teacher. In other instances, getting a license as a guidance and counselor alone is enough. You will need to finish your college courses and pass the PRAXIS exam before you get licensed.

You can work as a career guidance teacher in elementary school or high school. If you are working at the elementary level, you will mostly deal with the personal issues that students are experiencing. If you work at the high school level, you will mostly be offering student’s advice on what career paths to follow.

To gain entry to a college to enroll for a bachelor’s degree, you should at least have a pass in English and Math. You might be required to sit an entrance exam as a prerequisite for admission.

To become a qualified guidance and counselor, you can choose to do a postgraduate in guidance and counseling. You can do a part time course, attend full time classes or enroll in online certification programs. Some of your classes will involve such subjects as Sociology of education, career development and behavior and personal and social development. Before you can enroll in this postgraduate degree, it is a prerequisite for you to have a bachelors degree and teacher qualifications. You will undergo supervised field practice in guidance and counseling before you graduate.
