Custodian Career


The maintenance, cleaning, and repair needs of a building is done by a custodian.  A custodian is tasked to clean floors and walls, dispose of trash, maintain bathrooms, replace supplies, dust furniture, clean windows and glass, control pests, maintain gardens and landscapes, clean sidewalks and walk ways, and perform basic repairs. A custodian may be tasked to do some carpentry, wash dishes as well as lock and unlock doors.  A custodian uses different equipment and tools to do these tasks.  Though a custodian may work without any formal education, special training programs are available for aspiring custodians.

How to become a Custodian

Becoming a custodian does not require a high school diploma but being able to follow instructions is a must. One must also have basic math skills.  Employers provide the necessary training for an aspiring custodian.  Gain relevant work experience. Employers do prefer a custodian with some experience.  One must be physically fit since a custodian will spend their time walking, standing, bending, squatting, and lifting or pushing equipment.  One will also be working with chemical cleaners, so knowledge of how to handle such chemicals is a requirement as well. One must have skills in communication and human relations.

Custodian Courses, training, programs

A custodian training program provides an aspiring custodian with the necessary background and skills that are required for this type of career.  The program covers topics like room cleaning, daily floor maintenance, infectious cleaning, federal guidelines, OSHA (Occupational Health and Safety and Health Administration) requirements, management of custodian team, and reading safety data sheets.  Some programs are specialized and focus on needs of a specific line of business of industry.
