The dairy herdsman career revolves around the maintenance and breeding of dairy cattle.  One is tasked to work on beef cattle as well. The tasks and responsibilities of a dairy herdsman covers feeding and watering, maintaining of equipment, cleaning of living areas, breeding cattle, providing healthcare and shots, and handle routine procedures in the farm.  He is tasked to lead and supervise the staff as well as the farm workers.  He is also to provide the necessary support and assistance to veterinarians in diagnosis and treatment of cows that are sick.  His aim is to decrease the mortality rate of cattle and help in growing the business. A dairy herdsman is skilled in multitasking, communication, and management.

How to become a Dairy Herdsman

To become a dairy herdsman, one must earn a college degree, preferably animal science or other related field.  One must gain relevant years of experience in the cattle industry and animal health.  One must also have supervisory experience as well.  He must be able to administer drugs as well as take good care of the herd.  To become successful as a dairy herdsman, one must be able to perform general farm duties, implement breeding programs, and diagnose problems as they occur.  He must be able to meet milk quotas as required by the employer.
