How to Become a Database Administrator

Although a computer-related degree with a Database Administrator certification is sufficient to become a database administrator, most employers still prefer those with bachelor’s degree in computer science, management information system, or information science. These courses are commonly offered in Information Technology schools. Other employers also require computer related associated degree.

What is written in the job description is generally the duties of a Database Administrator, there might be additional duties that may be assigned to him by the immediate supervisor or employer if necessary. The common duties are installation of the required database software, working hand in hand with the Network or System Administrator and providing security in the database to protect the information stored. Furthermore, the Database administrator also handles administrating, optimizing, analyzing and designing of the database.

Also known for short as DBA, Database Administrators also provide database strategies that will monitor and improve the database capacity. They see to it that the information are secured and cannot be accessed from the outside, the capacity is able to handle the information entered and that plans and requirements are made for future expansion. Experience and good interpersonal skills are also  needed in this kind of field.

Applying in a company as a Database Administrator requires a certification that you have completed a training or degree of a database admin. You can have this by taking database administration courses. This may be a little costly but the career offers a lucrative future.

Due to continuous change in the technological industry, it is necessary to continuously undergo trainings and receive certifications such as the Microsoft Certified Database Administrator (MCDBA), Oracle OCA and OCP.
