Desktop Publisher Career


The desktop publisher is a key person in the preparation of drawings, text, photos, and clip art to be included in a publication.  It is his duty to prepare and print publications such as books, newspapers, magazines, brochures, calendars and newsletters.  He is to prepare materials that are informative and appealing.  He is also tasked to research, edit and write different types of materials.  The desktop publisher is also tasked to make presentations and advertising or marketing materials.  With this type of career, one must be creative and must be able to work with different software. A desktop publisher usually needs no formal training but earning an education will make a big difference.  Having a formal education in graphic design will allow one to gain the necessary knowledge and skills required for the job.

An aspiring desktop publisher must earn an associate or bachelor’s degree in graphic arts or any related field.  Though a degree is not generally required, an individual undergoing formal education will have a better chance of getting employed.  One must be skilled in communication as well as computer use.  One’s creativity and good eyesight will help one accomplish  his tasks and responsibilities.
