Drilling Operator Career


Workers in oil rigs are expected to do a lot of work that requires physical strength and fitness. It requires one to work long hours and away from the family for a long period of time.  But the career of an oil rig worker is indeed financially rewarding.  The drilling operator is one example of a career opportunity in oil rigs.  The drilling operator supervises oil rig crew in drilling holes for oil or gas wells.  He is responsible for maintenance and operation of various drilling equipments and systems, motors, generators, transmissions, pumps and other machineries used for drilling operations.  It is his job to make sure that everything is smoothly operating through coordination.  The drilling operator is expected to be able to work with a team, analyze situations and solve problems. He must be able to lead, communicate well and to be always on top of a situation.

How to become a Drilling Operator

The aspiring drilling operator is expected to have at least a high school diploma.  Having a degree, however, can gain one an advantage.  There are also specialized training programs available at accredited schools or training centers that would help one get a certification.  One can start from an entry-level position in an oil rig and be trained for a better position.  Advancing to drilling assistant position will get one into a supervisory position of a drilling operator.
