Career Description:

An electrocardiogram (EKG) is performed to check the activities of the heart to determine. The EKG technician, one the other hand, is a health care professional who performs an electrocardiogram. One places electrodes to different parts of the body test heart activity.  After testing, the EKG technician prints out the report indicating the impulses of the heart.  It is the EKG technician’s job to educate and explain the procedure to the patient.  He has to make sure that everything is set-up before the test is taken.  Running and reading the EKG test result is done under the direction of a physician.  The EKG technician is also tasked to do some clerical work and maintenance after the test.  It is a must that an EKG technician undergoes formal training to be able to provide accurate and efficient health care service.

How to become an EKG Technician

An EKG technician usually undergoes on-the-job training.  But some employers prefer certified EKG technicians.  To become one, one must get into a training program for EKG technicians or earn an associate’s degree.  Clinical activities are provided under the course program.  Completing the training or degree program and having clinical experience makes one qualified for certification.  Obtain a certification to have a better chance of landing a job.  If one desires advancement, pursuing higher studies and gaining a bachelor’s degree is a must.
