Electrical Technician Career

Career Description:

An electrical technician works under the supervision of an electrical engineer.  His responsibilities include testing, modifying, repairing and maintaining of electrical machines and equipments, electrical control apparatus and circuits.  He also puts together switch panels, transformers, motor-control devices, and other electrical equipments or devices.  An electrical technician looks into electrical problems or malfunctions and corrects it.  He also works on electrical testing, installing, modifying and replacing equipment to prevent problems or malfunctions.  Another task is to come up with diagrams, drawings, lay out or wirings and other specifications for various electrical systems.  An electrical technician must be willing to work in rather hazardous environment.  He must have good analytical, critical thinking, and problem solving skills.

How to become an Electrical Technician

The aspiring electrical technician must complete vocational training or an associate degree.  One must have relevant job experience which is related to this type of career.  Apprenticeship programs are provided together with classroom instruction.   One must be physically fit to perform some tasks that are rather physically demanding. Have an in-depth knowledge of the electrical theories, electrical codes and building codes. Obtain the appropriate licenses and certifications required for the job.  It is a must that an electrical technician takes continuing education to gain more knowledge and skills.  As new developments come up, it is wise to learn and be updated about it.  Join associations of electrical workers and network with other professionals.  This is a big part of one’s professional growth.
