The emergency department nurse, also known as the emergency room nurse, is housed in emergency rooms or intensive care units.  He is responsible for giving care to patients brought to these units or departments.  The tasks consist of providing medication, assist physicians, monitor the patient, and keeps medical records.  The challenge of this type of career is dealing with and handling patients who are critically ill or injured.  One has to have the ability to multitask and work under pressure.  It is a must for an emergency department nurse to also have good communication and exceptional interpersonal skills since the job requires one to work with a team.

How to become an Emergency Department Nurse

The path towards the career of an emergency department nurse takes on three paths. One may choose to earn a diploma through a nursing program, an associate’s degree or a bachelor’s degree in nursing.  An individual with a higher education, however, has a better chance of advancement.  After earning a nursing program or a degree, one has to take and pass the NCLEX exam.  Successfully passing the exam allows one to become licensed to practice his nursing career.  To practice as an emergency department nurse, one has to obtain a certification as well. Continue to study and educate oneself to become updated with new medical trends and technologies.
