Career Description:

Patients brought to the emergency rooms or trauma centers are initially treated and assessed by an emergency room nurse.  The emergency room nurse has an important role in handling patients suffering from critical or life-threatening health conditions. He is to give a quick assessment or evaluation of patients brought in. His responsibilities include identification of medical condition, check and document medical history, check vital signs, administer medication, and assist the physician in performing medical tasks.  At times, an emergency room nurse is assigned as a transport nurse. He provides patient care to those who are carried in helicopters, ambulances or other types of transportation.

How to become an Emergency Room Nurse

The aspiring emergency room nurse has to earn an associate or bachelor’s degree in nursing.  Upon completion of a degree, one can then proceed to take and pass the NCLEX-RN exam.  The NCLEX-RN exam is an examination taken for one to receive a license to practice as a registered nurse.  Obtain various certifications that will allow one to become a certified emergency room nurse.  Certifications give one a cutting edge in getting hired as an emergency room nurse.  One may continue his studies and obtain a master’s degree in nursing.  This is not necessary but it will give one an opportunity to advance in his nursing career.
