The pre-requisites for entrance into an engineering course are a strong foundation in Mathematics, Science and also subjects like English, Social Sciences and Humanities.
The basic qualification to be an engineer is an engineering degree. This is the minimum requirement even if you want to opt for an entry-level position. However, certain engineering jobs may be sometimes open to even graduates in Mathematics or Natural Science. If your objective is to be involved in more specialized areas of work, like research positions then you may have to equip yourself with a Master’s degree in Engineering.
Course subjects would include mainly a study of the branch of engineering of your choice, along with subjects like Mathematics and Physical or Life Sciences. Other subjects which usually form a part of the standard curriculum are general engineering, design course, computers and laboratory work.
Most colleges and Universities offer programs that are accredited by the Accreditation Board or Engineering and Technology (ABET), Inc. The accreditation is given based on various important factors, like curriculum, faculty, facilities etc, so it is important to select a college which has the necessary accreditation.
Most Engineering programs offering a Bachelor’s degree are for 4 years. Whereas the first two years are generally spent in introductory and foundation subjects, the last two years are designed with emphasis on the chosen field of specialization.
If you want to be a Professional Engineer (PE) meaning an engineer who offers services to the public directly, then you would require a licensure. This is a requirement in all the 50 States as well as District of Columbia. The pre-requisite to qualify for a licensure, is a degree from an ABET accredited program with four years of relevant experience. In addition to these, you should have passed a State examination.
Engineering is a constantly evolving technology whichever field you choose, so it is important to update your skills from time to time to improve your job prospects. Many professional societies offer different certification programs to update your technical skills.
