An exercise science career usually involves working in sports medicine facilities.  Exercise scientists help improve the health, fitness, and quality of life of people by developing exercise and nutrition programs.

An exercise scientist can also work with other medical and health workers, providing training and rehabilitation to persons suffering from injuries or illnesses.  Various job options are available for you as an exercise science professional depending on your field of interest.

How to become an exercise scientist

It helps to be committed to regular physical activity since a basic concept in the profession is the importance of regular exercise for a healthy body.  The education you need to take depends on the employer.  You can take a college degree in exercise science which is offered in many schools to give you an advantage in seeking higher-paying jobs.  Some job options like a group exercise instructor require only a certificate, but others would require you to have master’s or doctoral degree such as when you want to become a biomechanist.

The employment field for exercise scientists is broad.  Depending on the major field you choose, you may become an exercise physiologist, strength and conditioning coach, physical therapist, physician, or pharmaceutical sales.  Generally, your work will deal with helping prevent and treat injuries through the use of physical activity.

Qualifications: Courses, Training, Certification

You may prepare for this career as early as high school by taking science courses like biology and volunteering in hospitals or athletic training settings.

Basically, you will study the science of human movement and exercise and how you can use it for better health and fitness.  Most schools would require you to take an introductory course in exercise physiology, anatomy and physiology.  It is highly recommended that you take internship or practicum courses to gain practical and hands-on experience.

Some job options such as professions in physical therapy and personal training would require you to have a certificate.

Some schools require a GPA of 2.5 to be able to enter the exercise science program.  Requirements to enter schools and programs depend on the major field you opt for.  Most would require you to be at least a high school graduate or completed GED.  There are also various online study programs you can take.

Exercise Science Job Opportunities, Salaries and Recruitment

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) states that the job outlook for recreation and fitness is expected to grow faster than the average.

The variety of job options available in this career is a good advantage.  With this, there is also a wide range of salary.  Starting jobs may range from $22,000 to $25,000.  The BLS recorded average salaries of $26,000 for personal trainers and $47,000 for nutritionists in 2006.  The salary may be affected by geographic location and experience you have so it would be advisable to gain further professional training and education.
