A career in finance requires a minimum of bachelor’s degree in finance or related subjects like economics, business, law or mathematics. Some positions may require a Master’s degree in Business Administration or Finance or Economics or other related subjects.
Additional courses in fields like taxes, investments, banking, estate planning and risk management are also helpful. Depending on the career path you are pursuing, you can choose the course to meet your job requirements. Also, many jobs require licensure to practice. Most of these licenses require sponsorship as well as work experience. So, generally, you can apply for these licenses once you get a job.
Many institutes offer professional certification programs. The CFA Institute is one such institute which offers certification of a CFA(Charted Financial Analyst). The Association for Financial Professionals offers the Certified Treasury Professional credentials. TheInstitute of Management Accountants offers CMA, which is the Certified Management Accountant title. Another institute which offers certification and credentials is the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards which offers Certified Financial Planner certification. The criteria and requirements to enroll may vary for each course.
Financial industry is a complex and ever growing and ever evolving industry. It is necessary to cope up with the change in the industry by continuously upgrading your knowledge and skills.
Other than courses in financial related subjects, courses in software operations will also prove useful. The use of computers and different software to handle finance issues, is a given in most organizations. So, it is imperative that you are comfortable handling computers and using software packages that include the use of spreadsheets and statistical packages.
