A game programmer is primarily an engineer whose focus is the development of video games and other related software. However, do not be confuse game programmers with game designers as there are some game designers that also perform tasks of a game programmer. Just remember that the task of the game programmer is to develop the game but not design the game itself.

How to Become a Game Programmer

In order to become a game programmer, one only needs to have sufficient knowledge and experience in the field of programming and gaming. Game programmers with no formal education are a very common these days. However, employers in the computer gaming industry now require formal education for such programmers.

In the current trend of the computer games being produced, the number of programmers needed to a single game is numerous. There are now many types of programmers, each different with their specialties in game programming. Some of these are AI programmer, game physics programmer, UI programmer, Scripter, sound programmer, game tools programmer and many other more.

Game Programmers are the one responsible for the creation of the video and computer games. Although their main job is not really to develop game design, they actually “design” it as game artists. They solicit game ideas from the developer and put it into the frame that runs the game, which the language. Game programmers decide which proper language to use to produce results they want for the game users. It may be C++ which is commonly used in an object oriented type game today, Assembly, C+, C #, Java, Eiffel, Smalltalk, Ada and High Level Scripting languages.

Game programming is a technical job. It requires mastery of knowledge in computer and game languages. Game programmers usually spend four to five years in college to receive their diploma and certificate. The job is actually offered with high salaries. Many of today’s video and computer games are highly competitive. Object type games like mission games are in demand to the video game users. This is perhaps the reason why game developers hire more game programmers today than before.

As mentioned before, the current employers in the game programming industry prefer those with a bachelor’s degree in physics, computer science, computer science and mathematics. These courses are offered in any major universities.

There are also trainings also offered in Information technology schools and colleges that you can attend to in to gain more knowledge. Upon the completion of such training, you will be awarded with a proof that you have completed the game programming training.
