Career Description:

The career of a general manager revolves around the management all areas of operation within a business or organization. While managers head a specific unit or department, the general manager is most commonly responsible for all the departments within the organization.  In large corporations or firms, general manager may take on the responsibility of a specific unit or department.

Under the direction of a chief executive officer or vice president, the general manager plans, develops and implements an organization’s goals. It is the responsibility of a general manager to delegate specific tasks and makes sure that these tasks are done efficiently.  He coordinates, monitors and manages the daily operations of the different units or departments of the organization. He sees to it that all marketing, sales and other financial transactions are well managed.  The general manager must have excellent leadership, communication, analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills.

How to become a General Manager

Moving up to the position of a general manager requires one to have the necessary training and formal education.  An individual must earn a bachelor’s degree in any field that one is interested in.  Having a background in business administration, finance and accounting will benefit one in pursuing this type of career. To be a better candidate for general management, one must pursue earn a master’s degree or an MBA.  Gain much experience and skills to be considered for this position.  Getting into special training programs will help one in advancing towards the position of a general manager.
