A housekeeping career is more than cleaning. You will have to know how to cook, iron, make beds, buy groceries, have childcare skills, know how to set and prepare the table and have good decorating skills and generally run the household. Aside from this, you need to be a good communicator in order to commune well with your clients.

How to Become a Housekeeper

You can take this job after finishing High School or even when you are still in High School during your summer vacations. In most cases, you will gain housekeeping skills on the job. Each state has its own requirements for housekeepers, but it would be advisable for you to follow this career path if you are at least 18 years old. You have the option of becoming a certified housekeeper. Not most housekeepers get certification, hence this will give you a major advantage over other housekeepers. You have the choice of a career path in the hotel industry. You can also be employed as a housekeeper in a private home as a day maid or live in maid. Alternatively, you can start your own housekeeping business.

The more experience you have in this field, the higher your chances of getting a good job. You do not need any formal education to get this job. You have the option of working part time for one or two employers at the same time. You can also work in small and big hotels alike as a hotel housekeeper. All you need is good cleaning skills. Have a hatred for dirt and disorder. Be the type that likes everything clean and sparkling.

Qualifications: Courses, Training, Programs

You can take a number of courses, trainings and seminars to have a housekeeper career. For instance, you can attend one day seminars online or housekeeping workshops. There are several certification online programs available for those interested in a housekeeping career. These courses can last as short as one day or as long as several months. High school Home Economics classes are adequate to equip you for a housekeeping career. You can attend vocational schools and colleges to get training in various skills such as cooking, first aid or childcare. There are no prerequisite requirements for you to be enrolled for these classes.

Some of the classes you will go through as in Housekeeping classes include nutrition, early childhood classes, bookkeeping and household administration. The job outlook in this field is good and it should not be difficult for you to find and keep a job since there are many job openings. This is principally because the work is hard and the pay and benefits not so good. Carry out your job search through housekeeping agencies and recommendations from friends and relatives.

The pay for maid jobs depends on the type of household or institution you are working for, the number of hours you work, training and level of experience you have had. The pay can vary from $10 per hour to $5 an hour. Those who work as housekeepers in resorts or hotels can make as much as $11 an hour. The average is 42,000$ but this can vary greatly due many reasons e.g. location, experience, etc.
