How to choose a career

advertisement

Choosing a career can be ranked among the most important decisions one makes in one’s lifetime.  It is a life-changing decision and it should be given that due consideration and importance.

When you are going through that phase in life when you have to choose a career, it is important to keep a few points in mind:

Look within for answers.  Most people look at other people’s choices, when they are in the process of selecting their own careers.  However, you must remember life’s not a restaurant, where you order what others are ordering.  The choice must be based on your aptitudes, your talents, likes and desires.

Make a list of your strengths and weaknesses.  Analyze where your strong points lie.  The list should include your interests, your skills and your desires, as you are most likely to succeed where your aptitude lies.

Make a list of what you want to achieve in life.  A list of short term and long term goals is a good way to begin this.

It is also important, that your skills and talents match up to your goals.  It is one thing to want to do something; it is another to be able to do it.  While planning a career, it is important to keep your capabilities and talents and your goals in one direction.

The next step would be to plan out how to go about realizing those dreams and achieving those goals.  Identify the prerequisite qualifications required for a particular career.  It is good to get some career guidance, and weigh the pros and cons of your choices.

By adapting this kind of a systematic approach, one can successfully choose the right career.
