How To Start A Career In Information Technology

Starting a career in the information technology industry is probably what most student’s desire in college. Information technology is one of the rapidly changing and fastest growing industries of the world. One of the misconceptions that people have about this industry is that it revolves around computers. In reality, IT as it is known covers various aspects and computers is an integral part of it. Some of the growing areas of IT with high future prospects include bioinformatics, web technologies, cloud computing, large scale database, and global information systems among others. As an IT professional, you can choose from a wide range of occupations.

There are certain steps that you need to follow in order to start your career in information technology. The two main steps include:

  • Area of Specialization: Area of specialization plays an important role in information technology and it will stand you in good stead if you identify your area in advance. There are two ways to choose the area. First is identifying on the basis on future career prospects and the second is to choose on the basis of your interest. Some of the primary areas that you can specialize in include information security, computer networking, it governance, business intelligence, project management, information technology infrastructure library (ITIL), Unix, and Linux.
  • Education: Once you have identified your area of specialization, it is easy to opt for the right undergraduate course program or certification program for the same. It is advisable to always back-up your primary education (bachelors) with a secondary education (certification). So how do you go about it? Let’s take an example. If you want to specialize in Unix/Linux then you need to first complete your bachelors in information systems or in computer science. On completion, apply for a certification course in Unix/Linux system administration. The important aspect is knowing what undergraduate programs to apply for and what certification program will complement your undergraduate education and help you pursue a career in information technology.
