IT Management Career


IT management is the management of technology resources, such as computer hardware, software, data, network and technical staff, to meet the organization’s needs and goals.  IT management is headed by an IT manager.  The IT manager, just like any other manager, is tasked to plan, budget, organize, control, hire and train staff.  He is to oversee the whole IT program of an organization.  He is also responsible for designing computer software, provide technical support and make network plans.  It is the IT manager’s job to lead and motivate a team that will creatively and efficiently work together to provide IT services for a specific organization.

How to become an IT Manager

An aspiring IT manager must earn a bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology and other related fields.  To move up to an IT management position, one must have the necessary years of experience as an IT programmer or analyst.  Another way is to have valuable years of experience as an IT or computer programming supervisor.  Since an IT manager is to handle different types of people, he must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.   One may choose to get a certification or license.  This will increase one’s chance of landing that management position.  One must also continuously study and learn to be updated with the newest trends and technologies.

A degree in information technology or other related fields will equip one various subject areas, such as data processing, information systems, networking, programming, and systems analysis.  Volunteering or starting with an entry-level position in a company will earn one hands-on experience.  One will gain skills and strategies necessary for an IT management position.
