A legal assistant, also known as the paralegal, plays an important part in the legal system. One takes on a specific position in hearings, meetings, trials and closings.  A legal assistant is to provide the necessary assistance to lawyers.  His responsibilities include analysis of information gathered; identification and research of laws, articles and materials that may be of importance to the case; and preparation of all legal documents and files making them accessible to the lawyer.   One is also tasked to prepare and write drafts of documents and materials relevant for the cases handled.  One manages and organizes all documents such as contracts, wills, titles, affidavits, pleadings and motions.  The scope of responsibilities of a legal assistant depends on one’s employer.  A legal assistant may specialize in a specific field of law.  A legal assistant must have exceptional research, writing and analytical skills to become successful in this field.

How to become a Legal Assistant

To become a legal assistant one may earn a certificate, an associate or bachelors degree in paralegal studies. Get into internships and gain practical experience.  Getting employed highly depends on one’s education and training.  While employers provide training, having formal education gives one an edge from the others.  One must pursue a specialization so as to help him advance and gain specific skills.  Get certified through the National Association of Legal Assistants.  A certification makes one a better choice in doing the tasks and responsibilities specific for a legal assistant.
