The most obvious career path in the medical field is that of doctors, though it is just one among the many number of career options you can follow.  If your career choice is that of a doctor, then you must have a license to practice in any State.  Licenses are given to graduates of accredited medical schools or colleges, who have passed the licensing exam called the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE).  In addition to this, you must have completed one to seven years of graduate medical school (Residency) in an accredited program.

Many other professions in medical careers, likes nurses and RNs also need licenses to work.  It is important to verify whether the courses or training programs are accredited or not.  Generally, these programs are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and Institutional Committee for Graduate Medical Education (ICGME).

Certifications are necessary for doctors in Specialty subjects as well as Subspecialty.  These certifications can be given by any member board of the American Board of Medical Specialists (ABMS).

Courses, training and certifications are especially important in medicine careers as they help you to keep abreast of the various changes in the field and also facilitate in improving your skills in the chosen areas.
