Career Description

In an industrial setting the need for a millwright is inevitable.  Any industrial company and organization employs a millwright.  The millwright plays an important part in the operation of various manufacturing companies, industrial plants, power plants and transportation.  He is responsible for machinery installation and maintenance.  The dismantling and replacement of machines and its parts is handled by a millwright as well.  He is also responsible for the transport of machineries from one location to another.   With this type of career, one is entailed to know the ins and outs of an industrial setting.  One must have a running knowledge of the various technologies or machines used by a specific industrial company or organization.  This type of career requires one to have skills in communication, organization, analysis and human relations.  One must be able to work with a team.

How to become a Millwright

The aspiring millwright must at least have a high school diploma or GED.  One may pursue training programs or a degree in industrial technology.  Get into an apprenticeship program through labor unions.  Through the program one is able to gain practical skills and experience.  Gain skills in manufacturing and maintaining machines, using computers and other electronic equipment, and restoring machines.

A degree program in industrial technology provides various courses that will help an individual in pursuing a millwright career.  The program covers courses such as engineering drawing, woodwork technology, metalwork technology, basic electricity, power technology, computer-aided design and drafting, machine shop technology, welding technology, engine and automotive repair and maintenance, pictorial representation, architectural drafting, home planning, furniture and cabinet making, techniques in construction, machine design and fabrication, pattern making, photography, and upholstery.
