Career Description:

The career of a neonatal nurse involves the care of new born babies up to their 28th day.  A neonatal nurse is designated in specific levels depending on the condition of the baby under his care.   Level 1 involves care for healthy newborn babies. Level 2 is a nursery where special care is provided.  Babies born prematurely or babies having illnesses are included under this level. Level 3 is the neonatal intensive care unit where babies requiring highly specialized technology for survival are admitted.  The neonatal nurse provides direct care for the patient.  It is must that one is highly experienced and trained in this type of career.  Various certifications are required before one can be eligible to become a neonatal nurse.

How to become a Neonatal Nurse

One can start his career in neonatal nursing by earning a bachelors degree in nursing.  One should focus on child care.  Aside from a degree one must be a registered nurse as well.  It is a must that one has relevant clinical experience.  One should get a certification.  There are several certifications required for those working in the neonatal unit. Certifications, such as Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing, Neonatal Nurse Practitioner or Neonatal Resuscitation Provider, are choices one can obtain. One should continue acquiring the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to provide an exceptional healthcare service and maintain his license.  One dreaming of advancing to become a neonatal nurse practitioner must earn a masters degree in nursing.
