A career in computer networking is probably one of the most popular jobs in computer technology today; however, the complexity of the course and the broadness of the job description together with the required universal expertise have resulted to a shortage in networking professionals. Computer networking requires determination and extreme hard work so a lot of technical professionals have aspired for the positions that a computer networking career offers in a company. Competition for excellence in this type of field will always be strong despite the rumored shortage so if you want to be a part of this career, it will always be beneficial to do your homework and start researching about what a computer networking expert really does and how they came to be.

How to Become a Computer Networking Professional

Companies mostly include in job descriptions that experience is essential to get hired for the job. But this does not necessarily mean that fresh graduates have no place in a networking career. Computer networking is the same as many other technical careers. It requires experience but there is no other way to gain experience but to get hired so start with your bachelor’s degree now, study real hard, and try as many job vacancies as you can. One of them will be a surefire hit anyway.

Types, Description, Information

There are several job titles available for a networking professional. Below is a list of some of them:

  • Network Administrator – monitors day-to-day network performance
  • Network (Systems) Engineer – in charge of system upgrades, network security, etc.
  • Network (Service) Technician – responsible for troubleshooting and repair
  • Network Programmer/Analyst – accountable for network analysis
  • Network/Information Systems Manager – supervise the work of all those mentioned above

Computer networking mainly deals with creating and maintaining computer networks. Companies hire these professionals to take care of their computer network. Everything runs thru the use of computers nowadays so a glitch in the system or network might ruin not just the transactions for the day but also the long term operations and goals of a company. A computer network professional is mostly in charge of the virtual life of a company so it is vital that they have the proper experience and knowledge in the field.

Qualifications: Courses, Training, Certification

There are two ways on how to get a degree on computer networking. You can opt to go for a 4-year course or a shorter one. Both courses will give you the training and knowledge you will need to get hired. Afterwards certification exam is taken by computer networking aspirants to know if they are indeed ready for the job. Certifications would usually cost around $100-$300 USD and should be taken in intervals of usually 2-3 years.

Schools, Colleges and Universities

There is no definite course for computer networking. Any college that offers any of the following courses is highly suitable and recommended for the field:

  • Computer Science
  • Electrical and Computer Engineering
  • Information Systems
  • Communications Science
  • Telecommunications
  • Telecommunications Management
  • Telecomputing

Job Opportunities, Salaries and Recruitment

Vying for a position in the computer networking field is rather difficult and challenging. The best way to earn a job here is to have good communication skills and focus on your line of expertise in technology. Salaries usually depend on the person’s experience, local market condition, etc. The average salary of a Network expert is about $61,000 Still, the best way to get hired is to market yourself in a way that they won’t just say no to your offer.

    My age is 34 years. Presently I am working in Non-IT field i.e office administration in Mumbai. I have done MCA thrg. correspondence and also CCNA certification (Networking Engineer course) in Dec. 2010.

    I am trying to change my career from last one year in Networking field but I am not getting any break in Networking though I am having requisite qualification and certification? Why I am not getting any break…….whether it is because of my Age (34)
    I am very much interested to make my career in Networking.

    Please let me know where I am wrong.
    Please advise it is question of my career.

    i have taken a Computer Hardware and Networking diploma from Jetking Institute. but i had taken a long time break for my graduation and now i wanna improve my skill in computer networking fields please suggest me what course i should join for improve my skills in this fields…….
