An optician, also known as optical technicians or dispensing opticians, provides client assistance in choosing different eyewear. He is tasked to take eye measurements, prepare work order information, grind and fit lenses, forward work orders to ophthalmic laboratories, verify prescription, and assists clients for final fitting. He is to instruct the clients on the proper use and maintenance of the eyewear. He is to give advice on how to take care of their eyes as well.The optician is trained to use various equipment and tools to take needed eye measurements such as distance between the eye surface and the lenses and the area of the cornea. The optician is also tasked to keep records and client information. With this type of career one must have skills in communication, customer service, and organization.
How to become an Optician
To become an optician, one must have a high school diploma and then pursue a bachelor’s degree. There is no particular degree requirement, but a background in anatomy, physics, algebra, and trigonometry will prove to be helpful.One must get into an apprenticeship program and gain relevant training from an experienced optician, optometrist or ophthalmologist. Entering an opticianry program through universities or community colleges will help one in pursuing this type of career. One may obtain a license through a licensing organization such as the American Board of Opticianry.
