The career of a patient accounts clerk revolves around the maintenance of a patient’s account.  It is his duty and responsibility to accomplish the billing statement of a patient based on his transaction records.  One is also responsible for the collection of payments and makes sure that all medical charges are verified.  A patient accounts clerk is also tasked to collect patient information including diagnosis, treatments, procedures and medical insurance. It is a must that a patient accounts clerk be knowledgeable of computer applications and software to be able to do his tasks efficiently.  One must have good writing and speaking skills as well. Having good interpersonal skills will allow one to work with a team as well as deal with different types of clients.

How to become a Patient Accounts Clerk

The aspiring patient accounts clerk must finish high school or GED.  One may proceed and earn a bachelor’s degree in accounting or other business related field.  As one gets employed in a medical office, trainings are provided for by employers.  One is given background of the organization’s policies, guidelines and procedures.  One is also given background in computer applications used specifically for the position.  Gain relevant experience and obtain a certification.  A patient accounts clerk must continue to take courses and trainings.  One must be updated with the latest trends and changes in the health care industry.  The experience and training allows one to move up the corporate ladder.
