Career Description:

A patient care technician, also known as a nursing assistant, plays a vital role in patient care.  The responsibilities of a patient care technician covers monitoring patient’s condition, performing routine and clinical tasks, recording vital signs, maintaining patients’ rooms, setting up medical equipment, and assisting doctors or nurses in providing treatment or examinations.  It is the job of the patient care technician to provide patient assistance during feeding, bathing, grooming, and personal hygiene.  One gives assistance during patient transfer from and to the bed or wheelchair.  Help is also extended when a patient needs to walk.  It is the duty of a patient care technician to respond to any patient request or call.  A patient care technician must have good communication and interpersonal skills.

How to become a Patient Care Technician

To become a patient care technician, one must at least have a finished high school or GED.  Get into a patient care technician training program.  Go for an internship.  Obtaining an internship will allow one to gain the proper skills and relevant experience.  Seek certification.  To get a certification, one must check the requirements from certifying bodies or organizations. Requirements vary form state to state.  Finishing a training program and work experience is generally the requirement in getting a certification.
