A petroleum geologist, like the petroleum engineer, is after the extraction of oil and natural gas.  While the petroleum engineer comes up with methods, technologies and equipments, the petroleum geologist is to identify and recover oil and natural gas.  The petroleum geologist takes on the interesting part of discovery, analyzing data and mapping of oil sources.  It is only when a geologist’s findings is presented and approved that the actual extraction or drilling is done.  A petroleum geologist works with a team to be able to research and explore sources of oil and gas. It is a must that a person aspiring for this type of career to have strong background in geology.  He must also have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

How to become a Petroleum Geologist

An aspiring petroleum geologist must earn a bachelor’s degree in geology. One must take courses that focus on petroleum geology.  Getting an internship will have one gain practical experience.  One can start working after graduation or continue to pursue a specialized degree. Pursuing higher studies and obtaining a master’s or doctorate degree.  Getting post graduate degrees will give one an opportunity to specialize and be chosen for a specific field of employment.  Though a degree is important, experience in the field is also a must.
