Physician Assistant Career

The career of a physician assistant is similar to that of a licensed physician.  Having a different level of education than that of a physician, the physician assistant is to work under his supervision.  Also, a physician assistant is different from a medical assistant.  The physician assistant is not tasked to do clerical work.

The responsibilities and tasks of a physician assistant includes diagnosis and treatment of patients, interpretation and analysis of lab results and x-rays, give prescriptions, look into medical histories, assist in surgeries, recommend a type of therapy, and examination of patients.  The scope of tasks will depend on the supervising physician and the state law.

How to become a Physician Assistant

To become a physician assistant, one must have an associate, bachelors or master’s degree as well as relevant experience. One must gain physician assistant training in medical schools, community colleges, and teaching hospitals.  As one gains experience and more responsibilities, he becomes qualified for advancement and becomes a specialist.  Becoming an educator or college instructor is also a possibility. Obtain a state license and certification.

Certification may be obtained through the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.  Gain membership in professional associations as well.  A member of any professional association gains support as one pursues a physician assistant career.

A physician assistant program prepares an individual pursue this type of career through various subject areas.  The program includes topics such as behavioral and community medicine, pharmacology, cardiology, diagnostic imaging, surgical procedures, anatomy, medical terminology, physical diagnostics, microbiology, and healthcare research.  Through the program, one gains practical skills and experience through clerkships.
