Career Description:

The career of a project accountant takes on accounting tasks for specific projects or undertakings for a certain length of time.  The project accountant works closely with the project manager, accounting supervisor and accounting staff.  The project accountant works on various accounting activities and procedures such as project billing processes, preparation and management of invoices, maintenance of billing files and records, preparation of balance sheets, analysis and accomplishment of income statements, and preparation of tax returns.

He takes part in the development, implementation and improvement of the billing cycle.  It is also his task to accomplish financial and profitability reports.  The project accountant must have the necessary accounting background and computer skills to do this type of job.  It is a must the he has excellent math, communication, analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

How to become a Project Accountant

The aspiring project accountant must be able to earn a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration and other business-related field.  A choice may be made to pursue higher studies and earn a master’s degree. This gives one a better chance of getting employed.  Gain relevant experience in an area of accounting such as billing.  Gain advanced computer skills to be able to do the tasks required of a project accountant.  Obtain a certification to have an edge from the others vying for the position.
