The refinery operator career involves the operation of petroleum refining or processing units.  The tasks of a refinery operator coversoperation of equipments and machineries, maintenance of equipment, detection of malfunctions or problems, data collection, sample gathering, product quality verification, calculate values, perform tests, and technical recommendation application.  As a refinery operator, one must be able to launch operations based in specifications given.  One must be able to coordinate and synchronize activities among the units.  Having a career dependent on specific instructions, details and procedures, one has to have an eye for detail.  He must be excellent in communication, organization, analysis and reasoning.

How to become a Refinery Operator

To become a refinery operator, one must at least have a high school diploma or GED.  Some employers require experience related to the job position or the industry.  Pursuing an associate degree related to petroleum refining and processing will give one an advantage.  Operator training programs are also helpful for one wishing to pursue a refinery operator career.  One must be ready to work on shifting schedules and in hot and enclosed work areas.  Working as a refinery operator also requires one to work with various chemicals.  Securing a driver’s license is also a requirement for this type of career.
