Research Accountant Career
Research accounting is a very specialized branch of accounting, where a team of accountants offers its suggestions and inputs to a particular educational institution, usually a university or a college body, to assist researchers in completing their research project through financial assistance. Research accounting can also refer to the task of providing inputs and advice while estimating the fund distribution or budget allocation in the case of any kind of research project, not necessarily an educational one.
How to become a research accountant:
A research accountant, in order to be hired by the university body, must be a CPA or a certified public accountant as only CPAs are allowed to work in accounting firms, auditing posts and so on. In order to become a CPA, an individual must complete at least 150 hours of postsecondary work on accounting along with obtaining licensure from the AICPA. After the individual becomes a CPA, he may choose to work as a research assistant or obtain specialized training.

There are certain specialized courses on research accounting which enable students to learn how to report to the university body regarding funds, create auditing programs and policies, provide adequate support to the staff at the university and ensure correct allocation of funds for research. Research accountancy is not taught as such in most colleges at the undergraduate level, and hence it is a specialized subject taught at the postgraduate level. Most colleges, however, teach accountancy at the undergraduate level, and students can complete the coursework of those courses to specialize in research accounting later.
