You will need to do a Bachelor of Education degree for 4 years. You should major in Science since this is what you want to teach. If you want to teach Biology, major in Biology, if you want to teach Physics, major in Physics. You can minor in a subject of your choice.

Followed by a Master’s degree, specializing in your science area of interest. Some states will require that you finish your master’s degree within a certain time frame.

You will also need to fulfill a certain number of hours on ‘student contact’ before you are allowed to become a qualified science teacher. This is to gain classroom experience.

To gain admission to a credential teaching programs, some colleges will require that as a prerequisite, you pass the CSET test, which testsyour competency in Science subjects. You will also need to pas the CBEST test, which tests your reading, writing and math abilities. You may also need to present your Graduate Record Exam (GRE) before you gain admission, however, most universities will not require this. You have to check with the college to know this.

The average pay for those in the Science teacher career can vary depending on the Science taught. The salary for Biology teachers is $84,000, Chemistry teacher $74,000 and Physics teacher $77,000. The entry level positions for Science teachers may be a bit lower than this. But with experience and better qualifications your pay will increase. Generally, Science teachers earn higher than other teachers. Science teachers also get pension packages and insurance. This is in addition to the Stafford Loan Forgiveness Program which writes off $17,500 from student loans taken by Science teachers.
