Service Writer Career

The career of a service writer is an important part of a business transaction.  He is responsible for facilitating or coordinating transactions between the client and the company. With the knowledge of products, he is tasked to ensure that all queries and needs of clients are addressed.  He is tasked to make automotive maintenance schedules, delegate tasks to auto repair staff, research and estimate costs, estimate time for repairs, process warranties, manage and organize client profiles and coordinate with suppliers.

A service writer prepares the final bill for all the repairs done.  He is also tasked to sell other services as well as do inventory.  With this type of career, one must have the ability and skills to sell, negotiate, communicate, and delegate. Being in the automotive industry, one has to have a running knowledge of automotive repair and maintenance.  One must also know the parts, costs and other automotive services.

How to become a Service Writer

An aspiring service writer must at least have a high school diploma or GED.  Complete a vocational training program that focuses on automotive repair and maintenance.  One may also take an associate or bachelor’s degree that is related to automotive services. One may take automotive services courses in various automotive schools.  Gain relevant experience as well as skills in computer use.
