Skills Required for a Career in Marketing


A career in marketing requires certain skills and qualities which will help one perform his duties and responsibilities better and contribute positively towards the company. Some of these are general skills while others depend on the kind of marketing role one has, as there are many different types of jobs in this field. Although these skills may be different as every employer may look for something else depending on the project that he has, here are a few common skills that is expected from a person interested in a career in marketing:

  • Communication skills: This is the most important skill required in this field and one must have both excellent written and oral skills. He should also be good in interpersonal relations and have a dynamic personality
  • Smart: A smart personality and neat appearance are equally important as the marketing executive will have to meet many clients and representatives and hence he should be well-groomed
  • Analytical skills: Some marketing jobs involve a lot of research and so on needs to be good at math, have good analytical skills and researching ability and an eye for details
  • Networking skills: In this field, you will need to have a wide network and even have contacts in your competitor companies. You should be able to interact with new people and make as many contacts as possible
  • Creativity: As a marketing executive, you will have to come up with innovative promotional activities which will give you an edge over your competitors. For that you need to develop your creativity and learn to think out of the box
  • Organizational skills: You should have a clear idea of what you want to do and have good organizational abilities about various responsibilities and goals
  • Business skills: You must have basic knowledge of business management and operational functions
