To pursue a career in social work requires license or certifications in all the States as well District of Columbia.  This is in addition to the bachelor’s or master’s degree in social work.  Generally, one requires about 2 years or around 3000 hours of clinical experience, for qualifying for these certifications.  These requirements can vary with each State.  Social work licensing is an important aspect of qualifying for jobs in this field.

Some of the credentials which can help you get a good job include the Academy of Certified Social Workers (ACSW), the Diplomate in Clinical Social Work (DCSW) and the Qualified Clinical Social Worker (QCSW).  The National Association of Social Workersalso offers certifications, which can prove helpful.

Typically, courses in social work include subjects like social work values and ethics, human behavior, Psychology, social welfare policies and practices, field education and training.  The courses also include study of multi-cultural differences and social planning, which are very important in a mixed society.

Advanced specialty certifications can be pursued by those who have Master of Social Work (MSW).  These include Clinical Social Worker in Gerontology (CSW-G), Certified Advanced Children, Youth and Family Social Worker (C-ACYFSW), Certified Social Worker in Health Care (C-SWHC) among others.  Specialty certifications for Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) candidates include Certified Social Work Case Manager (C-SWCM), Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Social Worker.
