Social Work Opportunities, salaries and recruitment

Job Opportunities

According to studies, the employment opportunities for social workers are expected to grow by about 22% between 2006 and 2016.  This is way above the average growth rate of all the occupations.  Among all the types of social workers, those specializing in substance abuse and Gerontology will be much sought after.  The employment prospects may vary depending on the requirement of government funding by the public and private agencies, especially in these times of cut-backs.

Job openings for social workers are available in various fields, including nonprofit organizations, schools, hospitals, government agencies, old age and nursing homes to name a few.  International aid organizations also employ social workers.  Contrary to popular belief, private agencies and organizations employ social workers more than the government sector.  Competition for social worker jobs is more in the cities as compared to rural areas.

Social workers have the option of moving on to other related jobs like consulting, teaching or research and development etc. With enough experience and references many clinical social workers who are involved with psychotherapy move on to start their own private practices.

Career change towards formulation, implementation of policies in government agencies and other such viable options are available for social workers.

Salaries vary depending on the type of social work one is associated with, the kind of organization and also the experience.  Typically, salaries can range anywhere between $25,000 and $60,000 per annum.
