Career Description:

A sonogram technician, also known as a sonographer or ultrasound technician, specializes in the field of sonography.  Sonography is a medical procedure where sound waves are used to produce images of body organs, tissues or blood vessels.  These images are used by physicians and medical experts in making medical diagnosis.  It is the sonogram technician who takes these images through equipments used for ultrasound imaging.  It is his task to prepare the patient who will undergo such procedure making sure that one understands how it is done.  The sonogram technician also records a patient medical history, analyzes technical information and reports technical findings.  One must be skilled in communication, analysis and human relations.

How to become a Sonogram Technician

To become a sonogram technician, one must at least have a high school diploma or GED. It is best to have a background in life sciences, math, physics and algebra.  Earn a certificate program, an associate or bachelor’s degree in ultrasound technology or diagnostic medical sonography. One may choose to specialize in specific areas such as abdominal sonography, obstetrics and gynecological sonography, ophthalmic sonography, neurosonography and echocardiography. Gain certification through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography.
