Career Description:

A surgical technician provides assistance and various services before, during and after surgical procedures.  Before a surgery, the surgical technician transports the patient to and from the operating room, prepares all instruments and equipments to be used during the operation, and disinfects or cleans the patient’s area. During the surgery, it is his job to arrange the equipments, operate on machines, and assist in passing and holding tools or instruments used.  He monitors and checks on the patient’s vital signs and charts. He also makes sure that a patient is guided to the recovery room.  A surgical technician’s duty continues until after the surgery.  One is responsible for cleaning up the operating room making sure that all equipments, instruments and machines are in good condition and are kept properly.  One takes all specimens for laboratory testing and analysis.  It is a must that a surgical technician is able to work with a team and do various tasks efficiently.

How to become a Surgical Technician

To become a surgical technician, one must check on the various accredited schools that provide surgical technology degree or training programs.  One may then take a certification program or an associate’s degree in surgical technology. Obtain a certification through the Liaison Council on Certification for the Surgical Technologist.  Get an employment in various hospitals and clinics.  Gain relevant experience and earn a specialization.  Specializing in a specific area of medical practice will allow one to advance and move up the career ladder.

A degree in surgical technology gives one a background in various medical terms and medical sciences such as biology, physiology, anatomy microbiology and pharmacology.  One is also given clinical background through courses in patient care, operating room techniques and surgical procedures.
