Tax Auditor Career


The tax auditor career involves verification of the tax amount paid by a business or an individual.  It is the job of the tax auditor to check the tax records and verify if they are accurate.  One may work at the local, state or federal level.  Depending on the level, one is tasked to audit income tax returns and property taxes.  He is to make sure that all credits and deductions implemented are under the limits of the law.

The tax auditor is also tasked to gather information and do research to verify taxes paid.  He is to determine any fees, penalties or interest that must be paid by the taxpayer.  The tax auditor may also handle corporate tax or returns.  He is to collaborate with the management staff of the organization.

How to become a Tax Auditor

To become a tax auditor, one must earn a bachelor’s degree in accounting. Pursue further studies and earn a master’s degree, either in business or accounting.  Obtain a certification to get the designation of a Certified Public Accountant.  One may obtain other certifications as well.  To maintain one’s designation, one must take continuing education courses.  One should become a member of a professional association as well.  Becoming part of it will help one in pursuing a tax auditor career.
