A waiter takes clients’ orders at a restaurant. The restaurant manager or owner assigns them certain tables to serve. This waiter will give the order to the cook who prepares the meal. How to Become a Waiter

You do not need to have formal education to become a waiter. However, today employers are now requesting waiters to attain high school education. The basic skills needed to be a waiter include a neat appearance, keen eye, customer service skill, patience and a pleasant demeanor. There are vocational schools today that offer this training but most waiters find it convenient to learn on the job.

Top restaurants today prefer waiters who have had previous experience. Those without experience often work as dining room attendants then as they gain more experience are promoted to waiters. Other restaurants require their staff waiters to be fluent in certain languages like French, Spanish, English, etc.

Qualifications: Course, Training and Programs

Although training is not essential to find a job as a waiter, there are schools that offer under Tourism and Hospitality colleges. The program teaches the student to be able to provide beverage and quality food service, communicate confidently and professionally on phone and provide responsible alcohol service. You also learn to classify wines, decantation of wine, serving courses, rules of handling banquets and receptions, sanitation and safety norms and executing customer orders. To enroll under this course you are required to have completed at least year 10 of high school, have competent literacy and numerical skills. You should be of at least 18 years in order to serve and work with alcohol. During practical sessions, students are given the chance to work at the best hotels and cruises. This lets them familiarize with the real world and it mostly opens opportunities for employment after graduation.
