The type of web designer you want to be depends on the specialization you have chosen.  Many web designers specialize in one or more of the following options: HTML and CSS design, E-commerce, Animation, SEO (Search Engine Optimization), and Database Integration to name a few.  Some web designers specialize in particular types of websites like informative, educative, commercial, business etc.

Web designers must be proficient in computer skills and must be able to translate creative ideas into workable solutions.  Generally, web designers work on more than one project at a time. It is important to stick to budgets while designing websites, as this is one of the primary requirements of a client.

A web designer would be expected to use languages such as JavaScript, HTML (hypertext mark-up language), ColdFusion etc.  You would also have to know programs like CorelDraw, Dreamweaver, and Abode Photoshop among others to help in the layout and designing.

A degree in Web Design is generally the expected norm in this highly competitive field.  The subjects for most of the courses include Web Design concepts, its application, media tools, languages such as JavaScript, HTML among others, graphics and animation and other related training.  Certifications and courses can be pursued to improve on the existing skill-set to remain up to date in this ever evolving industry.
