With Internet an intrinsic part of our lives, our dependency on websites, be it for information, research or business purposes, has increased tremendously.  This has spurred the need for webmasters.  Webmasters, in a way are the masters of Internet, as they are the ones who make the websites that we surf on the Net.

How to become a webmaster

You can become a webmaster by completing an associate or a two-year degree program.  However, if you want to take on a more complex role, then you may need a 4 year bachelor’s degree.

Types, Description, Information

As a webmaster you can be either working for companies or individuals for maintaining their websites, or you could be running the websites on your own.  Webmasters perform a multitude of roles, like creating, sustaining, overseeing, and protecting the websites.

You must possess a wide range of skills and abilities.  The job requires you to constantly update the websites, monitor them and see how they can be improved to increase their performance.  Webmasters are expected to help in deciding the kind of software, server and other equipment which will be used.

Webmasters working for companies or businesses are expected to work along with a number of other professionals in the organization.  So, these careers need not only technical know-how but good interpersonal skills as well.

Qualifications: Courses, Training, Certification

A webmaster’s job description involves many different roles, so the qualification you need for this job, will vary depending on how proficient you want to become in your role as a webmaster.

Generally, a number of webmasters start their careers even after completion of a 2 year degree or an associate degree.  However, some may choose to do a four years bachelor’s degree in computer systems/ computer applications or other related subjects.  Some may major in Mathematics, which will equip them with stronger problem-solving skills, while some may study English or Art and Design to write good content or design the websites better.

Many institutions like Wisconsin Colleges and Universities Online offer certificate programs like Certified Internet Webmaster Associate for students who are interested in a Webmaster career.  Certifications can definitely help while searching for a job, as these authenticate your skills and knowledge.

Today most companies are dependent on the Internet to do their business.  This and also, the increase in new technologies such as wireless networks, have created a need for webmasters like never before.  Employment Outlook projects the job opportunities for webmasters as ‘excellent’ between 2006 and 2016.

Many companies, business organizations, schools, government agencies, etc. offer a number of job openings for webmasters.  Many people also choose to work on their own.  The average salary of webmasters is generally around $66,000 per year.

Good Info, any change you know which California universities offer webmaster degrees or programs?
