A payroll administrator is a clerk who is responsible for ensuring that the concerned people are paid on time and as per the company policies. This is a job which requires the individual to have good office skills such as proficiency in computer usage. The payroll administrator must work accurately when it comes to accounts, bookkeeping and all kinds of office tasks.

How to become a Payroll Administrator

In order to become a payroll administrator, one has to be able to handle accounting, spreadsheet software programs and database programs. There are bachelor degree programs for accounting, human resources and business administration.

There are also master degree programs and certification courses. There is a requirement of at least 5 years of experience to bag a job in this field. The candidate must also be adept in Automatic Data Processing programs, wage reporting, audits and termination. Federal wages laws, data entry skills and terminology and policies are all taught in the educational courses.

Payroll Administrator courses, training, programs:

Certified Payroll Professional program must be completed in order to be hired by employers. The APA or American Payroll Association is one which administers this program. One has to have at least 3 years of experience in order to qualify for the program. The candidates must also pass APA accredited courses in order to be designated the certification.

Certification and training is necessary. One can also enroll as a member of the APA. This allows one to gain industry related information by attending seminars, conferences and regular publications.
